In one old post I saw someone mentioning they spent $150 on buying OEM replacement tape.

Has there been any discussion about removing worn out tape and wrapping it with vinyl?

Its not like that protection stuff they put on new appliances that you're supposed to remove. Its meant to be permanent. Someone decided that certain markets would prefer black, so they created this tape stuff. Some markets had it, some they left it painted.

Then someone decided these same markets would now prefer body colored windshield.

Marketing decisions.

If your preference is body colored, remove the tape. It takes a bit of work, but comes out great.

Some have discussed that, but not sure if anyone ever did it. Seems feasible.

If you remove the tape more than likely the paint underneath is not going to match the rest of the paint on the car as that has been exposed to the elements. I still have the tape on mine

Removing the tape might not come out great. I recall reports of a few who removed the tape and found the windshield frame unfinished or only basically finished underneath. As has been well stated it was never designed to be removed.

I am glad my 2009 did not have the tape. I prefer the natural paint around the edges.
