Windshield Tape Removal (documented w/ pix) - Page 6 - S2KI Honda S2000 Forums

I'm looking through the maintenance section and reading this thread. I'm not sure if it changed but if you have an s2k that is not Berlina black but still has a black frame (not the gasket/seals) around the windshield does that mean the tape was never removed?

Or did that change with later models actually having a black trim?

Car Analogy

You can easily confirm its tape, aka wrap, if you see the overlap seems at to the top corners. Paint is all smooth all around.

But all year S windshield surround painted body color, some years also had black tape added, some didn't. But all cases body colored underneath if its got tape.

So as I'm searching for ones for sale that have a black trim, does that mean that someone just didn't know to take it off? Would I opt to leave it on upon purchase? I wonder how hard it would be to clean off any residue

If you get close you can physically see the tape, like this picture you can see where they overlap each other. Ignore the cracking, it was the first picture I found.

A lot of people take it off.

Its not like that protection stuff they put on new appliances that you're supposed to remove. Its meant to be permanent. Someone decided that certain markets would prefer black, so they created this tape stuff. Some markets had it, some they left it painted.

Then someone decided these same markets would now prefer body colored windshield.

Marketing decisions.

If your preference is body colored, remove the tape. It takes a bit of work, but comes out great.

The black tape was an inexpensive but permanent way to allow the windshield frame to blend more smoothly with the black soft top. The frame underneath was painted and prepped in the same manner as the body, but in the event of minor imperfections, it apparently did not receive the final quality corrections that exposed parts did. So a rare few owners have reported finding flaws when removing the tape.

Here's the rundown of where the tape was used.
- First, Berlina Black cars never had windshield tape, in any market or any model year.
- For non-Berlina Black cars, these cars DID HAVE windshield tape:
--- Japan: ’00-’01 only (i.e. GH-AP1-100 and LA-AP1-110)
--- U.S.: ’00-’07, plus ’08-’09 CR only (to blend with the Berlina Black hardtop)
--- Canada: ’00-’07 only
--- Europe/UK: None, ever!
