Wimpy horn dying..?
#1
The already wimpy stock horn in my s2k is dying I think. I'm not sure if it has to do with my amp, but it seems as though when I honk it sometimes comes out a bit.. hoarse, almost as if it were yelling with a sore throat. Does anyone know what this is caused by? Should I go with aftermarket horns? My budget is a little tight, I'm trying to save up for some TE-37s.

I live on a one lane road, and I honk around the blind corners on the way down and up, so my horn gets a lot of use. The original horn died in about 3 months. But mine died. Completely. No sore throat, nothing. Just went " ".
Took it back to the dealer, and they replaced it under warranty. No problems since.
I actually like the stock horn. The pitch is very directional, and the horn itself is very loud in front of the car, without being intolerable inside.
Most lower pitched aftermarket horns sound more 'masculine' and intimidating but I don't think they are as effective for my purposes. I actually need people to think "sounds like a car coming around the corner. I should slow down."
My neighbor bought an air horn that is supposed to be really loud for his 'vette, but the lower tone gets lost in the hills, and he complains that people don't hear it.
When I come around the corner, I often find a car already pulled over and waiting for me. (Could be because my neighbors are afraid of me...)
In any case, have the horn replaced under warranty, unless you actually WANT an aftermarket horn.

I swapped mine out for a set of twin air horns a while back. Today I had to use them for the first time. I was penned in with a truck backing toward me. As soon as he got about 2 feet away from my front bumper I let him have it. He had no trouble noticing me at all after that. One of my fears is someone backing into the front of my car so I always leave a good distance between me and the car in front if possible. Someone always tries to squeeze in though.

Decent horns are about $30-$50. I doubt this will bite into your nest egg much. I have the Hella triple airs. Hella load, very high pitched, they get your attention. The only thing with air horns is you can't "blip" them. They take a bit to pressurize.
