IMHO, performance first, everything else second.
There are used Comptechs and Vortechs on s2ki.com for ~$3000.

Honestly, the S2000 is a life style choice. For some of us, it's our only car, and so that means we are supposed to be too cool to care about bringing friends or luggage. It's one of those cars where most peeps don't even think about because they want to be "practical."
I've talked about this a few times with peeps I've met with ricer cars. They always tell me with that much $, they'd rather buy an EVO. All I tell them is, "the life style choice I made, to not give a **** if friends want to come along, or need a ride from the airport means nothing because it's my money. The feeling of having a roadster on a summer afternoon in So Cal with the top down will justify owning this car over any other." I usually don't get a response after this because they usually realize that they got their car for a different purpose. I'm not in it to race peeps in the middle of the street.

At first I used to get very upset when people didn't recognize the car's talent. Now I just don't give a sh*t cause it really is only my opinion that matters. Thats why I have the car..for MY personal enjoyment.
P.S. Cali is just full of haters anyways. Everybody here thinks its slow/gay/stupid/ugly/etc. If you go outside Cali with the car, the comments change instantly.

The S isnt a dragster well out of the box its not anyway. Even so, if its stock go to the track with these idiots and if your a decent driver you can shut their pie holes for them.

Weird, the S2000 gets a lot of respect from people who know about cars because its an enthusiast car from the ground up. Its built next to the NSX, another car most people have a lot of respect for. Most people who know about cars, respect it even if they don't love it.
People who don't know much about cars usually like the car because it looks nice, and its a convertible.
Even if it doesn't run 10 second 1/4 mile times, its still a reasonably fast car, that can hold its own on a road course, even stock - which is where the S2000 really shines.
I think your friends are just jealous that you can afford such a nice car
