Default Why do so few people appreciate handling?

On another forum, some guy just got done telling me a buick rendezvous could smoke my $30k econobox. He told me to buy a Stang or Challenger, because those are true cars, whereas mine is just a sh*tbox.

I'm sure this has been played out too many times for many of you, but why is it that so many Americans only look at HP and muscle when trying to judge a car? Why is it that driving a proper roadster with 50/50 weight balance and incredible handling is so unappealing?

Don't get me wrong, I love power -- the kind of torque you'll find in a Porche 911 or similar -- but I think the S2000 is a great combination of decent power, great handling, and a reasonable price range. Am I wrong???

My guess is most people haven't experienced it.

Let me guess, you're 17-20 and care what other people on a forum think about your car? Who cares? So long as you are happy with your car and your purchase then be happy.

Because people who think that narrow minded have never driven a true sports car anywhere near its limits on a road track or even a good curvy mountain road.

I have a muscle car buddy who had never been in an S2000 and he got his first ride in mine on the Tail of the Dragon at 85% of the handling limits of the car and he has never talked smack about the S2000 since!

Nope. I've had the S2k for 2 years now, I'm very happy with the purchase, and I'm not 17-20. I brought up some stuff about CAFE and how Honda has seemingly axed their performance car program in favor of hybridizing literally everything. A few guys just became d*cks and went off about how Honda has never had a decent sports car, and how you can get way more power for cheaper with something like a Mustang. Just felt I should step up and defend Honda's performance cars.

what's funny to me is how many "Muscle car guys" who ride motorcycles own Japanese "Rice Rocket" bikes like the Honda CBR....? Japanese Crotch Rockets are just 2 wheeled versions of the S2000.

Because it's easy to go fast with power and it takes skill and a proper road to go fast with handling (both of which are few and far between in most of the US). When most of the roads in the US were designed to be straight and flat, to go fast all you have to do is put your foot to the floor from stop light to stop light or on our super long stretches of freeway. Do that in the Honda and you go nowhere. Most of those muscle car guys equate speed with power. At least that's my theory.

The way I see it, speed is all relative anyway. If I want to go fast, I'll just take a ride in an airplane. If I want to enjoy driving, I'll take the S out on a curvy road/autox/race track.

Some people don't know the difference between a sword and a scalpel, and why each is useful in its own way.

Mr.X and Patium pretty much hit the nail on the head IMHO.... and I agree about the airplane thing for going fast...(but I am an air force aviator so I have easier access than most lol)

cuz precision doesnt make a dude feel like he has girthy schlong, which is really what it all boils down to.

same with a piss poor movie that has lots of explosions in it.

the schlong rules all

what really sucks is feeling like a fag for appreciating anything past the boom boom.

This is why I'll only talk cars with people who are involved in competitive motorsport. The car is a tool in the hands of the driver... instead of the driver being a tool.
