Default Whoa. Speedcraft kit _IS_ CARB legal.

That's not to say that it specifically has been CARB approved, but taking my car apart this weekend, we've seen that the wastegate is indeed routed back into the exhaust (and not open air). I don't think I was sure that it was before.

I have no doubt in my mind now, that this car would submit to CARB inspection, it's just a matter of time (and money?) for a tuner or individual to do it. Granted, this is as much a call to Speedcraft to do it, but I do think that some of you guys in California holding off specifically because of CARB reasons can rest a little bit easier.

The only thing that I think would still be a problem is the blow off valve, which blows off intake charges. Technically, it's clean air, but blow-by oil can get into that airstream.. but then again, there's no real difference in leaking oil through your turbo and leaking oil through any other part in your car.

Incidentally, I'll be removing the wastegate-to-downpipe pipe so I'll have an open wastegate. The hissing air is going to be a whole helluva lot louder.

I wouldn't recommend doing that cause you're going to be should 700 degree (celius) exhaust gasses in to your engine bay

You should have someone weld up a pipe from the wastegate to the bottom of your engine bay.

Also you'll have to weld up the hole that's left in your down pipe.

Also, just because the wastegate shoots in to the down pipe doesn't necessarily mean that it's CARB legal.. (maybe that catalitic converter has something to do with it? hahah)

To be CARB legal you have to retain all emissions control equipment from the stock car and show that the modifications do not materially affect emissions performance. They will actually put the car on a smog machine and do a detailed test.

Of course, the easy way in Cali is to buy a new car. Your first emissions test doesn't come for 4 years now. Then, when its time, you just slip a few $$ to the right emissions guy and have him test your friend's stock S2000.

to really be carb legal, whatever device you are talking about (in this case a turbo kit) has to be certified thru CARB.

Comptech said it cost them about $10K to certify the SC kit.

I guess if you passed emissions you could get away with it, but I don't live in Cali, so I don't know what the process is when getting a car tested.

In MD, they don't give a cr*p what you got stuck on your car as long as it passes the emissions test.
