It's the price we pay to live in Cali. I negotiated an '02 on the lot (helps) on a rainy day (helps) in late December (really helps). It took all of that to get MSRP here in the Bay Area and believe me, I'm no pushover. Walked out of two dealers and called or emailed every dealer within a 150 mile radius.
MSRP right now in the Bay Area would be doable. Tricky but doable.

damn you all!!! i payed 33even. tax, dealer, etc > 35something. he threw in free wheellocks which made me feel a little better. some other dealers wouldn't even think below sticker (Hillside Honda). they let me walk out telling me 36000. btw i bought mine in planet honda - the one that proclaims "largest dealer in the northeast". hhmph

I had a local dealership (DC burbs) quote me $37.5K (and a MY2001 with 3500 miles for $32K). I went shopping. Got an offer of $500 below MSRP in B'more.
I went back to the DC Dealership, and told them if they'd match, I'd buy the car. It turned out MSRP was their squeal number. $500 below they wouldn't do.
So, their markup cost them a sale. I might have taken MSRP if they had come up with it initially. They played the game. They lost. Hopefully, they will learn.
