Another dealer quoted me a price of $900 to ship a car from IL to the West Coast (that's with the Horseless Carriage company that everyone is talking about), so yes, it is possible to get a car at MSRP or below even in California -- just widen your net and don't buy locally.

I honestly can't figure out the dealerships around here to tell you the truth. I called Anthony Armijo of Metro Honda (Montclair, CA) and told him I was referred by S2ki.com. Asked him how much he could sell a new 2002 S2000 for. He immediately said MSRP, with no dealer add-ons, no hassles. They even had the black w/red interior that I was looking for on the lot!
It was as simple as that... no pressure sales for more stuff on the car, and we drove off the lot w/exactly what we expected. Hardly a word was spoken actually, we just signed our papers and took off.
What was interesting though was that we almost lost the car to someone who had walked into the lot two days before we were scheduled to visit the dealership (couldn't go the same day we talked on the phone). Supposedly they had a potentially interested party that was considering paying $3k over MSRP. Anyway that person decided not to buy.
Two weeks later, I'm cleaning out the glove box and found the original window price sticker. Check this out.... MSRP + Pro Pack (whatever that is) $595 + $7,500 Market Mark-Up!!!! WTF? Over $40,000 for the same car that we drove off with at MSRP only??
Goes to show that all dealers (even the ones willing to go MSRP) will go FISHING with this car and hope to catch "the big one".
