I think the air always passes through the filter whether its recirc'd or not, and even if the fan is off, air is still passing through the filter as it flows through the car.
That filter catches everything...

I purposefully set my hvac to recirc when I have the top down and no fan on. In the hot humid summer, I use a/c, recirc, and top up to cut the humidity. Believe me, the filter lasts twice as long this way. I'm an engineer, so I have sadly thought this through
