I don't know what you're looking for, but you could pick up a used Subaru (i'm biased). Full time AWD and very tossable in dry or snow. I've never been stuck inthe 5 years owning it.

I have a '97 Ford Ranger for my beater. I have 168,000 miles and counting and have not had any trouble from it yet!

Anything RWD, with a 4 or 5 speed for less than $1200 bucks that you can beat the crap out of then toss at the end of the winter is a good.

I just got a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Sport for $12K with 16K miles on it. I'm pretty happy with it.

For me it was important to get 4WD/AWD and lotsa room for winter gear (snowboarding, skiing, etc) I ended up spending a bit more than I wanted, but the car looks great (It is a softop!), puts out 225HP and ~230lb/ft of torque at 3000RPM. all in all it is a fun car to drive.

I bought a '96 Civic hatchback w/ 66K miles for $4500. Getting 30+ mpg is a wonderful thing when you have to commute 50 miles each day.

My 1998 Toyota 4Runner Ltd. has given me 77,000 absolutely trouble free miles. It is no where near as much fun as the S2000, but it is the most reliable, trouble free vehicle I have ever owned (including 6 Hondas). The 4Runner is built like a tank, which is a huge asset with New Jersey drivers. On top of that, it has all of the carrying capacity that my S lacks, and 4 wheel drive for snowy winters. Having the 4Runner as a beater is the best of both worlds.

The only drawback is the gas mileage. In 77,000 miles it has averaged a disappointing 16.79 mpg. It uses regular gas.

It is the perfect beater if you can find one for a reasonable price.

Early-mid '80s Celica. Not fast, not good looking. But very cheap and very fun. And they're bulletproof.

OR

93 Prelude VTEC

OR

New 7 Series BMW
