Default What's the perfect beater car?

Can anyone suggest the perfect beater car to use as a daily driver? To be used 100 miles a day, something that is fairly safe (395 drivers suck), has good mileage (I commute to dc), and i guess that's about it.

I just recently bought a 98 Merc Sable on e-bay for $2,500. It's a great cruiser and smooth ride with great gas mileage.

The best beater of them all ... an S2k! =) At least that's what I use My old Civic was to be my beater with my S as the "fun" car, but that lasted about a week! I eventually gave the civic to my sister. 48,000 miles in almost 2 years, enjoyed every single mile.

I have thought about it, if I could afford a decent winter car it would be a mini cooper s, but I cant. Budget in mind, I think I would find an old civic/prelude.

I think a 1st gen CRV is a nice alternative to the S. Not to big, but very functional. Outside the S, it has been my favorite Honda I've owned. The S & the CRV compliment each other very well. Each does things the other car can't.

I run a 88 Accord LXi. You can get them cheap (~$2000) and they are so common that parts are easy to come by. No airbags to steal, I often leave it unlocked at work, or at the airport parking lot for days at a time without worry.

If you get a car older than 1994, expect that it has the old R-12 refrigerant, which is expensive to maintain your A/C. I don't bother with it.

If I was to buy something new, I would get an Element.

I have a 1991 Accord EX with 240,000 miles on her and still running damn strong. She is my beater during the day while the S snoozes in the garage.

mileage - go for an insight! but if you want a real beater, nothing beats an old saab, non-turbo. 1989 900S is the best! Mine has started every day for the past 13 years. cool car.
