What's not to love about my S2000
#12
I'm still a coupe guy - no real hassles at the track about broomstick test/rollcage, aesthetics, no leaky/ripping/noisy/blind top, etc. Everyone is different, and my wishes are against the S mantra, but would still be nice to have a Prelude/Integra sister RWD coupe.

I remember seeing the S really and truly for the 1st time on Honda Tech about four or five years ago... Where I live there are few S2k's around ( I count 5 ), and you see them even less before you own one. I fell for the car at that moment and went around talkin about it. My girl at the time told me that she had looked at them when she bought her Solara. I day dreamed and hoped, but life had a grip on me at the time, and many things were up on the priority list at the time and none of them included the S2k.
I'm not like most buyers in that I had never driven the car before I decided to buy it. I loved it purely from an aesthetic point of view. I saw what was possible on the forums and my decision was made. I drove an S for the first time about a month before I went to get my car, and it happened totally by coincidence and luck. I asked a guy at the tire changing place if I could drive his car while they worked on my hatch and he threw me the keys! WTF? I sat in the car, put the key in, started it in that classic S2k way and drove away. When I came back I was actually scared because I had never experienced any thing like it (I knew how much I liked going fast and knew how much trouble I could get in) I'd raced motorcycles, driven Z06's, had a couple Camaro's, but this was different it was like putting on a glove and although the suspension was stiff it wasn't jarring and I could feel every crease in the road, the feedback was completely amazing... It was SCHWEET! One month later I bought mine having only seen internet pics!

I look at my # of posts and realize that i too might have a long term love story to tell.
ill try to be brief.
my friend and went to an exotic car rental place in 2000. we wanted to treat ourselves, but couldnt afford any of them... except the lowly honda s2000. still a whopping $125 a day plus miles. our original thought was a ferrari and all we could get was a honda. was a crappy feelin. we rented it from this dude who we now partially regret ever meeting.
that night was one of the best nights of our lives that did not involve sex. we drove all night till the sun came up and we had to return the car. i didnt know exactly what F1 was but i felt like how it sounded. I could not understand what this car was. and at the time, i had not driven many other sports cars so i thought to myself, if this honda is this good, then ferrari etc must be out of this world. the fun was epic...until... we started smelling clutch. note, we both knew how to drive stick. my theory of what happened was that yes, we drove it hard, but the clutch was already nearly gone when we got it. the car limped back to the rental place where the agent proceeded to tell us that we would be liable for all the repairs. after a few days, we heard that the bill was $1800. we took him to small claims court where the judge didnt seem to care much and lost. it was very traumatizing for young kids if you can imagine. but still, the feeling of that car stuck with me.
i wanted one. pined for one. told anyone who would listen what a great car it was. i talked about it so much that 2 of close friends actually drove the car solely because of me and ended up buying them. yet i still could not afford one. i wanted the car i had to die so badly so i could justify getting a replacement.
after 5 years of this kind of crap and being on the s2ki board hearing other people talk about the joys of ownership, an opportunity arose. a member on the board was selling his my04 with like 13k miles on it. he had done a great job customizing it. seat heaters, stereo, light flywheel, act clutch which made you feel extremely connected to the car. maybe too much sometimes. i drove up with some friends to san jose and we drove it back down on hwy 1. it was like a wet dream. funny part is that the guy i bought the car from ended up buying 2 more after he sold it to me.
ive added mods of my own. 4.56 gears, ap1 ecu so it revs to 9k, stiffening bars, intake, better tires, etc. the car is a friggin masterpiece to me and im just waiting for it to get stolen. it would be a PITA to get it into this configuration again. i've had zero problems and couldnt be happier. since my initial drive 11 years ago, i've made it my mission to drive everything i could to see if there was a car more fun to drive than this. that has included ferraris, porsches, vettes, lotus, m cars, amg, lambos, tesla, astons (HORRIBLE CARS, but pretty) and believe me or not, the s2k wins by FAR. everything else just feel heavy or disconnected. the f430 was the only car that even came close imo. i've been wanting to try an Atom or KTM as im sure they will be interesting.
BUT, the bad parts. unfortunately, socal has lots of traffic and there are many days where i wonder if i should be driving a prius instead. but when the road opens up...
i love how i see other cars, drive them, etc, i used to feel bad. lacking. not hip with the newest stuff. but now, the S is like our little secret. let the world continue with the hp escalation war. they just dont get it and thats ok with me.
that didn't end up being brief. sorry.
and also not to start an AP war, I really wish the AP2 came with the AP1 steering ratio. The AP1 is more fun to drive.
ill try to be brief.

The only thing I truly dislike is the AP1 cupholder position. It is seriously impossible to drive comfortable with anything in there...the other day at McD I ordered a drink and the lady said "ANY SIZE DRINK FOR $1 TODAY" and I still had to walk away with a medium. UNSAT.

Talking about a flaw on this car is like talking about a freckle on one of Scarlet Johanssen's boobs. It's still magnificent beyond description and not at all a reason to miss out on the experience.
That being said, I wish this car had a better 6th gear. I do a lot of highway driving, and I don't need to be at 4K RPM while going 75. 5th gear should be just at the powerband at highway cruising speed for passing, and 6th should be to quiet the engine for a tame cruise.
