The '02-03 ECU will require you to take the car to the dealer so that the key can be reprogrammed to match the ECU security code for the engine disable device.

You will do better with a well tuned VAFC on an '00-01. Expect a total cost of $350-500 total for the VAFC/harness/tune depending on where you buy the VAFC & harness. Best bang for the buck is to buy the VAFC used...they are plentiful (VAFC I = $100-130 used; VAFC II = $150-175 used). Expect peak gain of 8-10whp and larger mid-range depending on the skill of the tuner and your VTEC crossover point. A VAFC is only as good as its tuner...get a recommendation in your local forum for a decent tuner near you.

An AEM intake will provide a cheap hp boost, but be warned that the relocated filter is in a spot prone to getting wet or sucking up water. Several owners have lost engines due to hydolock from the AEM/Injun style intake. You must learn to take care in rain or driving through deep puddles.

Gears are probably the best performance bang for the buck.

Gears should be at the top of your list.
