what's the deal with the start button?

It's part of the uniqueness of this car. Race cars start with a button. It is properly located to the left of the wheel because if you stall a the car in a race, you can select the 1st gear with your right hand and re-start the car with your left.
This is something you cannot do if you have to perform both procedures with your right hand (at least not simultaneously).

Now for everyone else, I wasn't complaining! I'm a mechanical engineer and software developer, and pay a lot of attention to user interfaces. Honda normally does a great job in this area and focuses on simplicity. Other than the few legitimate reasons noted here, the key+button setup is an exception to the typical Honda way. It seemed like an obvious criticism to make.

I don't think the start button is any easier than the key alone, and it actually requires an additional step. Nevertheless, every time I start my S I'm reminded of what a unique car it is and it still makes me smile. I think the start button is way cool.
