I think the answer to this question depends on what you want out of your car. The AP1 (1999-2003) had the 2.0L that rev's to 9K, and is a little more twitchy as far as handling goes (this could be good or bad depending on who you ask). The seats in the AP1 are a little more form fitting IMO.. The AP2 is a little more forgiving for a daily commuter, it's a little more planted as far as grip goes, and the seats are more (fat boy friendly) lol. The main difference is that the AP2 used the 2.2L that only rev's to 8k (8300 actually) but it's much more usable power IMO. I don't feel that you could go wrong with either... If you do get a Ap1, the best years were the 02-03. You can find tons of info if you search for Ap1 vs Ap2 on here. Good luck with your decision!

Well, the suggestion I always make to people is as follows. First, figure out what color you want, or don't want. Second, find the nicest, lowest mileage example of that car that you can afford.
Personally I refuse to get into the "AP1 versus AP2" pissing contest. They're all wonderful cars.

you should test drive both. they drive slightly different IMO.
i went from an 02 to an 04 thinking extra 1k rpm is not that big of a deal. wrong. but it didn't bug me enough to immediately trade in. eventually i got used to the lowered rpm + .2 liter. i actually liked my 04.
in the end...
i concluded that few more horses + 9k was the combo to have. so i came back to an 03. can't really go wrong with either or...drive both and see what fits you

i like tcs in the 06+
best options are typically
02-03 for high redline (2nd is over 60, not under) without some of the first year minor issues
the ap2 with the best price for the slight hp/tq bump and a newer car
CR for the best performance regardless of cost
but really, id look at long term cost first and foremost and reliability (car to car) second. the year wouldn't make much difference to me, just the condition of the cars i see, so i'd probably start looking for an 02-03 for a track car and get an 04+ if i found the same condition car at a better price.
i like TCS, but you could probably get an 02-04 and add an aftermarket TCS system and be thousands ahead if you wanted it, and most people don't seem to be fond of electronic gadgets like that when tracking.
