I test drove:
-Boxster Base model
-Audi TT Quattro Convertible
-BMW Z3 2.8

-Hated the Boxster...felt extremly un responsive.
-Loved the TT save the cramped cockpit (IMO) and the manual roof, which I dislike despite weight savings.
-Z3 I must say was the worst of the bunch. Vague steering. Styling that did not appeal to my subjective tastes, and pedal cluster felt very "awkward" I.E I did not like the way the accelerator pedal sat in relation to the floor (it is almost vertical), and when depressed, only the top half of the pedal falls away from you, unlike most other cars where the entire pedal moves with the force of your foot. Does that make any sense? Guess not. Oh well..just my 02c

This is the only thing I drove that felt better than the s2000, but I couldn't afford the insurance.

well...

I had my heart set on either a RSX-S / WRX / 3.2 CL type S / Vette...

Didn't get the WRX cuz my fiance thought it was ugly...
Didn't get the RSX-S cuz they wouldn't give it to me at the price I wanted...
Didn't get the 3.2 CL Type S cuz...for almost the same price...I could get a Stook...
Didn't get the Vette cuz I didn't want to pay that much...wanted a conv that I didn't have to put down...even though my fiance wanted me to get that one...I am happier with my Stook...also didn't want a Domestic...sorry...

Silver IS 300. Car was on order and 1 week away from arrival until I forced my wife to just come and look at the S2K at a local dealer. I found this forum and found a dealer across the country that would sell it for MSRP.

No regrets. Except the IS300 would be driven more on weekends which I spend with my wife and 4 yr. old!!!

I first saw the S2K in Car & Driver about three years ago and immediately fell in love. In April of '99 I bought a new Accord EX V-6 coupe. When the S2000 came out in September of that year, I had to have one. My wife inherited the Accord and I got an S.

Mike you raced star mazda series. My friend who races star mazda said that the s2000 was much better in ever aspect.

I was thinking of getting into star mazda, but i think im leaning toward the russell racing graduate series. Better cars!@

Lotus Elise - too primitive
Mazda MX5 (Miata) - too slow
WRX - I loved it and I ordered it, until I saw the S2000 (which was not available at the time of my ordering the WRX).

S2000 released Saturday 21 August 1999
23/8 I saw my 1st one on the road
24/8 Test drove one
25/8 Found a dealer with one available (all S2000s had supposedly been preallocated)
26/8 Ordered it
27/8 Picked it up.

Mazda Miata - Excellent handling and nice shifter, but I didn't fit in the cockpit and the engine, though peppy, lacked power.

BMW Z3 2.8 - Nice retro styling, silky engine with good power, but cabin ergonomics weren't the best and I didn't like the way it handled.

Porsche Boxster - I drove the 2.5 (1999) and 2.7 (2000) liter versions (Boxster S not out yet). The newer car was my favorite. Excellent handling and smooth, turbine-like power delivery, but not quite as strong as the S2000. I loved the cabin fit, steering and brake feel, but once I drove the S2000 I knew which car was right for me. It is solid, agile and responsive at a much lower price point. If the S2000 didn't exist, I'd have gone for the Porsche.

Audi TT - coupe 180hp, to slow too much wheel hop, though the ergonomics were good.

Z3 2.8 - again too slow and more expensive than the S. Also felt "primitive" to me like someone said earlier.

Lexus IS 300, no manual shift so I ruled it out but a very nice car.

Acura CL Type-S - Very nice car (and I could have gotten it for $4K LESS than the S2000) but not as fun to drive. My wife really liked it though. Again no manual shift but it had tons of power.

Mustang Cobra - Just not a Ford guy and I thought the car didn't have near the handling prowess of the S. Seemed like it had lots of power but the car didn't know how to use it.

Corvette - Couldn't see spending 10K-20K more for a car that has such poor build quality. Lots of power though and that chassis did know how to use it. I know two people who loved the S but bought the Corvette. I think I still made the better choice.

Porsche Boxter - Nice car but too expensive if you get the same performance as the S. Didn't even bother driving one. Also would not want to pay the maintainence on the Porsche.

After buying my car I like the S2000 even more than the other cars I've listed due in part to other owners I have met. We are all similar in our thinking when it comes to cars. The Atlanta club rules!
