Thumbs up What is rattling in my trunk...?

I have this problem that just recently started happening and is driving me nuts....not sure where the sound is coming from but it's definitely the trunk area on the passenger side.

A quick history of my car:

2005 Rio s2000 with oem trunk panels, no spare tire, removed rear plastic tray piece where softtop rests. Car is sitting lowered on Tien coils at the soft setting and running 18" rims/tires.

I do not even have my subwoofer enclosure back there just yet and when I wiggle my amp rack it makes no noise so that's not it. (my amp rack sits on top of the gas tank).

The rattling sound seems to be coming from my passenger side and sounds like a flapping plastic panel that is hitting either metal or some other part. It's noticeable on any rut in the road and horrible when I'm driving over rough roads.

Is there any part of the softtop when retracted that can hit anything? Or could it be the oem jack/tools piece that is making noise?

Just trying to narrow the source down since fixing it would be easy if I knew what is wrong!

Suggestions please......................

thanks,
rick

Check the seat belt latch banging against the plastic on the passenger side. Will do this if it is not at the top of the seat

Nope my pass. seatbelt is always clipped and buckled into the car when not in use to prevent exactly what you just said.

Going to strip my trunk tonight...argh!

Maybe your soft top is now resting much lower than it ought to. Go in the trunk and put some support under it to see if the noise goes away.

or stick someone small in the back of the trunk and drive around and have that person pinpoint the noise for you...

Could it be the two bars that act as springs for the trunk lid hitting each other?

Put a cold body in the trunk, that should cure it. Don't forget to use body bag, you will start to have the odor problem in a few day.

j/k

I used to have the same problem, turns out the emergency latch opener inside the trunk was the one that makes noise. Stuff some tissues in between those compartments see if the noise goes away.
