i park mine at the furthest spot from the store and usually take up two spots and back it in towards the curb and by the time i come out i'll have a couple of cars around me but they park the same way and have decent cars (clk, 350z, 240sx ) so i don't bother checking my car because they take care of theirs and everyone gives space. but when i park a little closer and in just one spot there is always that one person that has to park right next to it and make me nervous. and dr. darkness save your experiment, i was going into walmart one day and parked ALL the way in the back there wasn't a car within 50 ft of mine and as i'm walking in a minivan with a dad and his boy and two girls got out and i turned around to ask him. he replied "don't worry i am careful and so are my kids but my van has been broken into a couple of times and usually nice cars like this have alarms of some sort, and even though it's a minivan it's my only mode of trans and just like you don't want it messed with anymore" so i said ok and his little boy was looking in it but put his hands behind his back and didn't put his nose on the glass so atleast he taught his kids respect of other people's property.

Luckily most Lamborghini's will not be able to leave a ding on your car.

I understand a good argument that we can use to justify being.... the way we are.

Ok, so the car isn't worth $250k, I'll come out and say it. But it is worth something else, it gives us a certain amount of utility(the type in economics). Say my S gives me a certain utility, the measure of how much pleasure I get from the good. I love the car, work hard to own it, enjoy driving it and wanted to buy it. So let's say I get a utility of 1,000,000.

I would hope the average Geo Metro owner bought the car because it was cheap and is good on gas, they aren't much to look at and only have three cylinders. The person gets a utility of 100.

A Ferrari owner, who hopefully used disposable income to buy the car rather than rack up that much debt on a car, may not be as in love with the car utility of 500,000. They love their Ferrari, but don't have to work that hard to afford it, and therefor don't appreciate it as much as I appreciate my S.

So to me, my S is worth more than that dude's Ferrari is worth to him.

I didn't think I would use econ to explain anything, I'll start paying better attention.

I have found cars parked next to me in the outback, but on those occasions, the cars are nicely tended and I got the feeling there was a safety in numbers factor.

When there is no outback parking to be found (downtown parking lots for example) I look for spots next to other nice cars and am grateful for a nice car (with a careful owner) to be in the next slot.
