Does your Dad think you did the car / engine any harm? After all, he does race, he should know something about cars and engines.

Since a missed shift can blow an engine; it's much more important to learn to shift accurately before you learn to shift quickly. Always be *sure* about which gear you are in before lifting the clutch. One trick that's helpfully is to feel how the shifter pulls to the center between 3-4. If you use a light touch,you can feel the difference between 4th and 2nd. If instead of hitting the area between 2 and 4, you had actually gone into 2nd, this would be a completely different thread. Do a search, there's a few good threads on shifting here somewhere.
