what you could do is just cut the wire rather than having the plug... and just tap the wires into the accessory plug wires

Yep, I used the "hard wire" cord that came with mine and ran it under the rubber seal at the top of the windshield and then down inside the A pillar trim and straight down into the fuse panel near the driver's left leg. And I mounted my detector like this:

Just unplug, unclip and throw it into my pocket when I leave the car.

I cut my power cord and tapped into the "hot" wire in the dome light. It wasn't too difficult and I mount my detector to the rear view mirror.

Much like what xviper did, I have a Passport 8500, but I used the windshield mount to put it just to the right of the rear-view mirror, and two pieces of double-sided tape where the detector actually makes contact with the glass so there's no bouncing. Sorry I don't have a digital camera or I'd show how it looks. Then ran the wire under the rubber lip along the top of the windshield, down the a-pillar and into the fuse box. And I have the remote display mounted with velcro under the dash so if I have the main unit in full-dark mode I can still see the visual alert flashing at me from under the dash where other drivers/cops can't see it.

It always looks trashy to have a power cord hanging down regardless of where the power socket is, do it the right way and conceal the cord.

Hard wire it. It's very easy.

My Passport 8500.

Removed the useless drivers visor. Screwed the windshield mount(sans suction cups) to the right side of recess. Ran the Escort optional hard wire cord into the windshield trim under top trim over and down inside the drivers pillar to the spade on the fuse block that powers up with the ignition.

Easy to pop off and store. The cord just hangs slightly.
