Default What is the crush washer for?

The first time I heard this when I went to go buy my oil filter at the Honda dealer. They ask me if I wanted to get a crush washer I was why and they said I dunno. But Honda said I should so I will. Just wondering why I should always put the crush washer. It doesn't actually crush.

It helps seal the locknut to the oil pan, so there's no oil leak. Alway change the crushwasher when u remove your oil plug

Actually, the crush washer does crush (and spread) a little; thereby making the seal. Use one. They're very cheap insurance.

and some members of this board turn them around and reuse them... for the cost, i would just get a new one. but you definitely need one to properly seal the oil plug (bolt).

Yeah, they're cheap. Next time you buy some parts from HandA or HardTopGuy or any other dealer, add a six or ten washers (and why not a few for the diff and a couple for the tranny?). You'll spend maybe ten or twenty bucks and then be set for years to come. You may even look forward to using them!

Actually, the 'crush' washer does crush. When you take off your old one, compare the face of it to the new one. A pic would be worth a million words, but you can see the heighth difference between the compressed and non-compressed areas of the washer.

If re-used, it will crush a little each time. The dealer (a good one, anyway) will give you one for free when you buy the oil and filter from them. It can be re-used, to a point, untill it starts to distort. A new one each time is good peace of mind. I personally change mine every other oil change.
