Its a tool tray.
Instead of tools flying around your trunk they are nice and tightly kept in a (styrofoam kinda stuff) tray.
When you have a flat, you should move that tray (with all the tools) to where the spare sits and put the flat (front or rear) in the trunk.
Only when that tray is removed will the flat tire/wheel fit standing upright in the trunk.

Remember to ALLWAYS put the spare on the front, even with a flat rear tire.
In that case you put a front on the rear.

Its all in the manual.
(manual = a small book, esp. one giving information or instructions according to Dictionary.com)

Worth a bump. READ the MANUAL. I had a flat on the rear while travelling in Florida, and I was glad I read the manual and knew the drill.

Actually, according to manual, it can't be uset to fit the flat tyre as it has the whole dack has to be removed and placed where the replacement tyre normally is. RTFM !!

So, as far as I understood Honda was not planing anything specific for this.

My foam tray is taking up space in a closet, along with the carpeted cover.

I took the tools and jack out of the tray, wrapped them in a towel and stuffed into the spare tire.

Having a deeper trunk lets me put a small duffel bag with tools, tire inflator, a big bowie knife (don't ask) and other essentials like duct tape and zip ties.

I can carry all the junk in the trunk, LOL, and not lose any trunk space. That styrofoam tray was kind of useless in my book.
