Was this deck designed for any definite purpose?

When you puncture a tire, you can put your punctured tire in there vertically!

Its a tool tray.
Instead of tools flying around your trunk they are nice and tightly kept in a (styrofoam kinda stuff) tray.
When you have a flat, you should move that tray (with all the tools) to where the spare sits and put the flat (front or rear) in the trunk.
Only when that tray is removed will the flat tire/wheel fit standing upright in the trunk.

Remember to ALLWAYS put the spare on the front, even with a flat rear tire.
In that case you put a front on the rear.

Its all in the manual.
(manual = a small book, esp. one giving information or instructions according to Dictionary.com)

you can hide all type of things in there.

but main use of it is for a flat tire which amazingly fit very well.

I bought the small "Slime Green" inflater kit that fits in this space almost perfect. Probably 1/4in higher than perfect but a piece of matching carpet solved this problem.
If interested, check with one of your local auto parts stores or Pep-Boys where I bought mine. The small electric pump works well enough for an emergency and is lighter and smaller than anything manual that you may find.

After sticking all the tire changing stuff in various socks, I moved all of that to the spare tire. I then removed the styrofoam and can add a couple days worth of clothing stuffed in those space bags when we travel........
