No, not at all. I drove a VW Jetta, and while it was a fairly nice car, nobody gave it much attention. My HS's parking lot was littered with luxury SUVs (think Escalades and Land Rovers). A friend of mine even drove a W211 E55. While it would have been fun to have a nicer car, I was glad to fly under the radar, and as a bonus, my car went untouched when someone decided to key all the nice cars in the school parking lot.

I drove an 1986 Plymouth Reliant K my Jr year, easily the worst car in the parking lot, but I found ways to make it fun. This was 2004 too, so I was driving an 18 yr old car. ahah
Sr year I drove a 91 Accord which I kept MINT and got props for being a clean older car.
No haters though

Never had a problem with people in HS. I had CRV back in 99-00.
People don't hate you (in general) because you have an awesome car. People hate you because you either treat people like shit or you think they hate you because you're insecure.

Drove my parents car for a bit until I got a new accord sedan for my senior year. No hate really because the lot was filled with infinitis, bmws, benz.. rich asian kids.
Only time was when someone stole the registration tag off my parents suv. cheap bastards.

My first car was given to me with a blown engine. Spent about $1500 getting it going from 0-60 in over a minute...no joke. Car was a total POS but it got from point A to B. Actually got some compliments but looking back...what the !!!! was I thinking!?!?!
