vtec'ing before 600 miles

I beleive VTEC is always "on."
Yes, *SECOND STAGE* VTEC kicks in at 6000 RPM when heavy on the throttle. And yes it even does with 250 miles on the car. You can take it up to 7000 rpm gently and no radical exhaust pitch change. The car was designed with complex controllers. The motor is a *race* engine. You are not going to hurt it as long as you don't bounce it off 9000 in 1st gear constantly (common physics), and then who knows? the damage may not be apparent till 90,000 miles. By that time, you've sold it and drive the S2500

VTEC engagement happens with oil pressure. If you are low, it wont kick in. Not sure if this is due to lack of pressure or by ECU design to protect the engine but I would assume the VTEC will pull enough oil out of the pan to cause a problem if it's too low. Another reason we need 5+ quarts.

pellis_s2k, don't depend on the idiot light to tell you anything. cde found out that the low oil idiot light comes on when your engine seizes from low oil.
