It really is best hitting that VTEC transition with the top down. The strong and highly audible change in engine sound reinforces the sudden torque change, and it makes it all feel more enjoyable. By contrast, I have driven a few cars with 'continuously variable' valve timing, and the dramatic effect is missing. Also, the S2000 VTEC is mechanically much simpler, consisiting only of a relay and an oil-pressure-driven rod. As magnificent and subtle as BMW's system is, it can lead to major overhaul activity after high mileage is attained. Our system is truly 'binary.'

I would think that the car would feel like it was "kicking" harder in cold weather, because the engine is sucking in colder / denser air.....thus creating more HP. Would be even more noticable if you have a CAI installed....

Oh....and you cannot hit VTEC prior to the car warming up....hot cam will not engage, kind to a safety device to prevent people from killing their engines .

Just VTEC till you need coke bottle glasses. Any more than that and you won't see well enough to drive.

Optionally, you can get Lasic surgery every couple of years

I relate my car's VTEC feel to when I watch COPS and see these out of shape, fat lowlifes running away and manage to jump these 7ft. high residential fences in one fluid motion.

It's a seemingly magical, Ditka powered kick in the pants that can't be explained.

this is a great post.. these are the things i've been asking myself and friends. when I first got MY02 (2months ago), i would go past 6k (VTEC) fairly moderately, expecting to feel a burst kind of like a turbo would.. i though there was something wrong with mine.. but recently, i have been noticing the vtec more... give it gas and you feel it.. it does feel good.. last night, an impala was playing with me (cruising at 60ish) so i dropped it to 3rd right into VTEC, WOT... top was down.. i felt it and it felt good.. extra good to see him disappear in the rear mirror.. i missed my exit but that was ok..
