Default VTEC - insights?

I'm up to 701 miles this morning.
So I let the VTEC monster out of the bag last night.

I'm extremely intrigued by the nature of this somewhat unpredictable beast. There are times under full throttle and it is like an explosion of power, but there have been times under partial throttle when the VTEC step has been subtle. Then I noticed if I was very light on the throttle the engine would spin up to 8,000 and a VTEC jump was never detected. All very interesting. I'm sure there is some logic to this; I just don't have enough experience with it yet. One thing for sure, it is clearly a blast, and when it is subtle I feel a little overcome me.

Thanks Bieg, that seems to be the key.
I also noticed mansfieldpro's thread Dude- I can't VTEC and there were lots of good insights there.

VTEC engagement is only going to happen when the ECU detects that it is needed. If you "put put" up to redline like I do every once in a while, the ECU isn't going to bother engaging the system. It's been a few years, but we had a discussion at what % throttle VTEC would actually engage.

What's more interesting... is that it engages at xRPM, but it disengaged at a lower RPM... so xRPM isn't always the magic number!

Just something else to think about:

I have noticed that the slightest incline/decline will affect the time it takes to climb up the tach. Probably due to the low torque
