Default This very peculiar dealer situation has me worried

I bought my 01 recently, but it only has one key. I go to the dealer to have one made, they give me my car back, but there's only one key; they tell me the other is in the car. It wasn't. So, after looking a while, they make another key.

the thing that has me worried is that there is another key out there. true, when they do the reprogram, it makes that other key useless to start the car, but what if that third "lost" key was present during the reprogram?

would you be worried?

The immobilizer system can store up to 6 key codes. If your new key that was "lost" was programmed, it will still work when "found".

When the keys are reprogrammed, the previous keys stored should be deleted. A non-programmed key will still open the doors, and turn the switch, but won't start the car.

It depends if the tech added a key, or deleted the previous keys, then reprogrammed new keys.

The immobilizer system comprises of a key reader and a program in the ECU. You put the key into the ignition slot. The reader scans a hidden pellet inside the key. The reader sends this code to the ECU. If the ECU determines it's "friendly", it will allow the fuel pump to work. If the key has the wrong code or no code, the fuel pump will not operate and neither will the car.
I think GM had the first of this type of system on their Corvettes.

GM was the first to US manufacturer to use a Immobilizer type key. The GM system used resistors built into the key, not near as sophisticated as the transponders built into the honda keys.

yea i've searched the car. no key. it's just fishy that they would "lose" a key right after they made it. well, if my car is stolen in the next few weeks I'll know how.

BTW, I paid $84 for the new key, including programming.
