UPS damaged my new diff...what should I do?
#11
Shu,
It looks like UPS caused some serious damage to that diff I sold you. There was nothing wrong with the packaging--it was in a sturdy UPS box and had both bubble wrap and popcorn for cushion. I used more packing material in this box then Full-Race used in the box they sent me my R200 diff in, and nothing happened to it during shipment.
It is my guess that a careless UPS worker did not pay attention to both the fragile and heavy labels on the box, under-estimated the weight, and dropped it on the ground. Did the box look crushed in any way?
I paid for $1500 in insurance, and I would definitely submit a claim through UPS if I was you. Please let me know if I can be of any help.

If this was packed in such a way that the rear bolts to exit the box, it was clearly not packaged properly. I doubt UPS would take the liability on this one. It is worth a try, but don't hold your breath.
Now, for what to do with it.
1. You can swap the 1/2 shafts from your OEM diff to this diff. They just pop out and are only held in place with a C clip. I would be interested in the LSD that it fits into. It looks like it took some force to bend that ear. It may have damaged the LSD. I doubt it, but it could have.
2. The rear cover, if you can live with how it looks, it will be fine. If it bothers you, you can replace it. Cost about 200 in parts.
3. Bolt, Just remove it and install one from your OEM diff. They are about 10 each.

Shu,
I have initiated a claim with UPS. According to their website it is better if the shipper initiates a claim. Anyways, a UPS "inspector" in your area will be calling you tomorrow to arrange an inspection. Please let me know what they say.
Again, I am very sorry that UPS damaged your diff and I am going to do all that I can to help you out!

Justin, thanks for doing that...I was just about to do it myself. I appreciate your efforts and hope everything works out. I'll keep you updated with progress.
In Justin's defense, there really was a good amount of padding and packing material in the box. The bent stud ripped through a piece of heavy padding, a fairly sturdy box, and packing tape. The hole isn't very big, either, so it barely ripped through.

Keep us posted, I'm curious how UPS handles such matters with a firm shipper such as 2QYK4U. for being a good merchant!
I'd print those pictures and have them available for the inspector. Of course he can argue they can't prove it wasn't dropped after they were taken, but it will at least show him you are not going to be a push over.
