I have Polk Audio DB651's. I used the supplied brackets, but didn't use the stock baskets. They drop right in and I didn't have to modify anything.

As far as speaker quality, I think they are average. There are better speakers out there.
I have the same speakers but I'm running them w/o an amp.

chickdr,

So you're saying the Polk's were a significant improvement over the stock speakers?

More importantly, they just bolted right in? You didn't have to cut any plastic or make any other modifications?

Anyone else know of any other speakers that bolt right in, without modifying or cutting anything?

Thanks!
Yep- no mods. Took stock speakers out put new Polk's in. Yes they sound much better(more efficient). The only "mod" I made was to take the metal bracket off the back of the tweeter and glue it to the new Polk tweeter.

I highly recommend getting a quality aftermarket HU.
You're not getting the full quality out of the speakers w/ stock radio.
You'll be surprised what an aftermarket HU could do even w/ stock speakers.
Like Woodson said, check out the Electronics forum.
Tons of great information there.

I'm very happy with my Polk Db components, though I had to do a little trimming not a big deal.

the sensitivity should be an issue if youre using the stock head unit and no amplifier. sensitivity measures the dB output per Watt input, and without a separate amp, it will really affect what sounds best.

if you're not amplifying it, youll get more sound out of the infinity reference or a comparable product because it has a very high sensitivity.

if you are amplfying it, speakers like high end polks sound great. but to me, high end polks on the factory system would sound underpowered. i don't know if polk has a higher sensitivity line of component speakers. crutchfield usually has those specs.

they upgraded the stereo in this car from the factory? boy it must have been real crap originally. so i just put rear speakers in and it is better, behind the seats, inthe little air vents, there is room behind them for speakers.

I also went with the Alpine Type-R components. Had to do major surgery on the stock baskets to make them fit...the magnets were huge. You can do anything with a dremel. It's almost as fantastic as duct tape. I can actually here music with the top down, yea.

Polk does - they are called the Db series(aptly named) They are 92db efficiency rating(similar to the Infinity speakers). The Db's are also quite reasonable. I got my 6500 components for $100. The new version is the 6501 and goes for around $120/set on EBay.
