driving stick isn't all that easy to get the hang of if you don't know exactly how it all works. you need to practice blipping the throttle to get it above the targeted rpm for second gear and then let off while you slide out the clutch pedal. our cars are great at letting us feel the friction so you will know when you are making smooth shifts. also the faster you are accelerating the faster the shifter will move into gear so if you are going relatively slow don't get upset that you can't slam the thing down into second very fast.. just apply appropriate pressure and let the components do most of the work by themselves. if you can get your s2k rolling in first without stalling or jumping forward then you are perfectly capable of rev matching effectively while shifting through the rest of the gears. practice makes perfect people. god knows i've improved since i bought my s2k.

practice, practice, practice. and it will become second nature.

Make sure you are not letting the clutch out too fast, let it slip a little to mate the relative speeds. This will cause some wear, but you will be getting closer to rev matching soon, so the wear factor won't be too great.

Go to a site that will describe what is happening to the engine, transmission, and clutch as you shift. Understanding what is going on will help a lot in being able to drive any manual transmission car smoothly. I think the site is called how things work or something like that.

Good luck and welcome to S2K ownership!

but you really don't want to be riding the clutch.....
you really want to get to a point where you can match the RPM perfectly so that you can let out the clutch pretty quickly

also some things to note....
1) when driving don't leave your foot on the clutch....don't want to risk putting pressure on the clutch pedal while you're driving
2) don't push the accel pedal until AFTER the clutch is fully out.

this will make the clutch last longer

This site is great for learning the basics:

Enjoy your new car!

Someone said that when upshifting you Blip it then let it fall to the right level? I thought you only did that when downshifting. Upshifting you just match revs... I am just checking, as I am 21 and am far from knowing the best techniques, although I've been driving manual for 5 years, and am doing it relatively smoothly.

same difference.. some people try to hold their foot at a constant rpm some like to tap it to get rpms up higher than the target and let back off a little bit while its mating with the clutch. the clutch will 'fall' into place quickly and you will not hear much grinding if you are rev matching and shifting smoothly.

This is 2004. A good tranny with decent syncros should not require any "finesse". Sounds like he just needs to keep practicing to me.

You're right, and I agree it sounds like he needs more practice.

What I should have said is it doesn't take much effort to shift smoothly in this car. This is one of the best and smoothest trannies out there. If you do have problems shifting, you should practice your technique more.

i disagree with that somewhat

some cars have notorious notchy 2nd or 3rd gear engagement....esp when the car is cold
