Transporting four stock tires in an AP2

No passenger seat and you'll make it happen. Picked up a set of 17x9 with 245 series tires. 3 in the passenger side and 1 in the trunk without the spare and tool tray. I got pulled over that day and the cop was amazed how I fit a set of wheels in there. hah

No, that's what the Blanket and flip flop are for Besides, a tire wouldn't necessarily "scratch" the paint as much as it would leave a rubber scuff - similar to what happens at the track when rubber marbles get thrown up and leave streaks.

im just thinking that the blanket, being pressed down by the tires, would have put some massive swirls in the clearcoat even with minimal movement...unless that's a microfiber blanket

That's the most amazing thing I've seen today!

It's definitely NOT impossible. I transported 4 stock bridgestones recently in my MY07. I removed the spare tire and had one of the bridgestones in the trunk. I had two stacked on top of each other on the passenger seat and one laying on top of the passenger side roll hoop with the roll hoop going through the middle of the tire. I only had to move them a few miles and it was all street driving, but I highly suggest laying down towels/sheets to keep the interior clean and probably tying down the tire sitting with the roll hoop through it.
I had the top down, in case that wasn't clear. I highly doubt the top would close with the tire sitting on the roll hoops.
Driving like that with no tie downs was fine for a few miles, but definitely safer with tie downs. Good Luck!
Oh and the tire in the trunk went in horizontally. With the spare removed, it fit, but you do have to squeeze it in there. I was ok with it because I got to close the trunk properly this way.
