Default trade in value for used 2002 s2000???

hey folks,

first, don't worry. i want to trade mine in for a MY2002 white/red. i have sebring/blk...kinda settled for it, but now i truely know that i want a white/red one. regrets...

anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew the trade in i could expect to get IF (that's a big if) i decided to trade in my s2000. i got the hardtop installed too. 5300 miles. pretty much flawless condition, except for some paint chips, regular wear and tear. got the spark plug tsb done, and one oil change done at the dealer (3750 miles).

on top of that, anyone know of where i could get a white s2000? i've been trying to contact local dealers, but they're not answering the phones!!! nor replying to my emails!!! oh well...

thanks for all the input and advice...

Yea, I had to settle for black as well. I wanted white. You are going to take a pretty big hit in the pocket if you don't sell it on the side by yourself because a dealership isn't going to offer you nearly as much as you could get by selling it yourself.

well, this is what i'm willing to take at the very least...

2002 Silver/Black S2000 with 5300 miles. $29,000 (KBB lists a 2001 with my miles at $28,xxx so figured a 2002 would be worth more)
Hardtop. $1500

Total = $30,500
now if i can get the car for $31,000 - $32,000 then i'd go for it. i'd be paying $500 - $1500 extra...

i know i'd be loosing money, about $3000-$4500 because of the hardtop and extra cash. plus all the tax i already paid on the original purchase.

now that i think about it, is white really worth it??? hmmm... well i'll go in and talk about it with a dealer. see what kind of deal i might be able to work.

Even with a private sale you'd be taking a big hit, no way going into the 4th build year are you going to get over 30k w/hardtop.

26.5-28k with the hardtop seems fair price.

Ah, this is a topic still fresh in my mind...

I traded my 2002 S2000 with about 7500 miles towards a M3. The BMW dealer gave me 29400 trade in value. Yes, thats not a typo, they gave me 29400 for it. WHen I calculated the tax savings on top of that (for trading in the car), I effectively got around 30900 for the S2000 (about 1500 in tax savings from paying sales tax on full purchase price of M3). I felt I got a fair price on my trade in, as she was in perfect condition. Initially the dealer was offering 27500 for the trade, but I said I wouldn't be able to accept that and left. The dealer called me back and told me to return in 2 days when the used car buyer was present, and then after about 2 hours of negotiations, they ended up a final offer of 29400. Oh yeah, I got a nice deal on the m3 as well, 500 under Msrp.

Now this is the funny part. The dealer is now trying to sell the S2000 with an asking price of 32900. Yes, they are asking for a price higher than MSRP for a used S2000! To say the least, the car is still on their lot, after 3 weeks. I still drive by to make sure my baby is still doing alright!

As as side note, there is a used car dealer approximatelly 2 blocks from my BMW dealer, that has a 2000 S2000 for sale as well. When I checked it out, it had just over 5000 miles with an asking price of 29000. Great condition as well. Unfortunately, that car has been on the lot for over 5 weeks now.

Later.

mwy23,
I currently own a 2002 silver/red.
When I was looking for an s2k, my first choice was a GP White, and second being SPA Yellow.
Dealer had neither.
Between Red, Suzuka Blue, and Sebring silver which the dealer did have in stock, I drove home in the Sebring.
Whenever I see a White s2k on the road or in a parking lot, I do wonder 'it would've been nice to have GP White'.
However, I realize that an S2k is an S2k no matter what color. And, eventually, no matter which color you own, another color may surface as being cooler, better, hotter, or even more enjoyable.

If trading for a newer model year 2003 s2k, or to a non-s2k (M3, 350Z, SUV, etc.), then perhaps trading-in will be worth the loss. But to go from 2002 silver to 2002 white may not buy you that happiness or satisfaction. I do understand that you want a white/red and 2003 will not have that color combo.

One thing to avoid is to go from your 2002 silver to a used white. I say this because, since you bought yours new, you are the original owner, and it will always be 'new' to the original owner.

Keep us updated.

hello guys,

first, thanks for all the input and stories...great reading!!!

well, got back from the dealer and he said that i'd probably have to pay a $6000 difference to get the white. there is no white on the lot and there isn't one ordered yet...so it'd be shipped in from montana.

$6k is a little steep for a simple color change. the dealer said they'd give me $26k for my s2000!!! and then they'd give me the new white for MSRP!!! i'd still have the hardtop tho...and i could sell it hopefully for $2000 considering its only 1 week old now.

well, looks like i'm stuck with silver/black for now. i wanted white so badly tho! but like S2000inVTEC said, "an S2k is an S2k no matter what color." great words...

perhaps i'll be painting mine white...have the only white/black S2000 in the states...that i know of of course...hehehe...or perhaps ordering the exterior panels from honda in GP White??? haha... that's $$$$$$$
