Here's my take.

I've been topping off the tanks in all the Hondas I've owned for decades. An '86 Integra for 10 years, a '96 Accord for five and currently an '01 Integra GSR (and soon an '06 S2000), I have not had any issues nor the smell of gasoline as a result of topping off. Call it a habit, I just prefer to have a *full* tank.

Please come back one day and let us know a few things:

1. How much does it cost to diagnose your CEL and then replace and repair the EVAP cannister?
2. How much fuel you lose on those hot days you fill 'er right up to the top and then immediately leave the car out in the sun parked?
3. How many firetrucks came to your place after you sqeezed the last drop of gas into your tank and then you parked it in a heated parking garage on a cold winter day? And afterwards, do your neighbours still like you and want you around?

I already know the answers to questions #2 and #3. I just want to compare notes.

Well, since Xviper put it this way.

Has anyone ever actually had problems due to topping off their tank?

Yes, when I was young and foolish in the ways of pumping gas. I would top off my RX-7, and ended up flooding the charcoal canister. Took about a month for the fuel smell to go away as the gas slowly evaporated. You don't want to have a fuel smell following you around.
