I think the manual says to maximally top off twice when the pump stops automatically. I personally stop filling when the pump stops by itself and do not top off. There should always be a little bit of free space left in the tank.

Its best when the pump clicks off to stop pumping gas. The reason is you have a cannister located on the car that traps fumes coming from the gas tank. When this element in the tank gets saturated you have to replace it. This is not a cheap thing to do. The cannister is filled with charcoal.

Ive topped off a couple of times, both to get to a round $ amount (paying cash), and both times gas spilled out on me - big time!
to answer your question, YES, topping off is bad and potentially dangerous. Think about it, the gas is spilling all over your rear wheel/tire

Don't know about you guys, but I pay by credit card at the pump or at the counter in some places. What does it matter if you don't round off to the nearest nickel or dime or buck? It's an electronic transaction. It's not like you're digging pennies out of your wallet.

I live in NJ and I always get out of my car and give the attendant my credit card to fill up. I stand by my car the whole time so when I hear that click, I can hit the little plastic sensor on the 'gas pump stand thingy' signaling the end of the fillup.
Good thing too, one guy almost filled up 87 in my car. He asked what I wanted and I said 93. Then goes to fill 87.

Its all in the head Dave, its all in the head. Males have a complex regarding them getting "the perfect" fillup. Do you know how disappointed a man gets when he does a XX.01 fillup?

It took me years to get out of that habit. I guess, as we get older, the idea of "perfect" in all aspects of life, takes a significant and steady decline. I used to have pretty high standards for what constituted a really fine looking girl. Now, I'm just happy she's got a pulse.
Thats classic man. Age made you a cynic. A funny one at that.
