I have removed poorly added tint from a window with a defroster on it. It can be done, it is a time consuming and difficult task to do right. Basically it takes a lot of elbow grease because you can't use a razor blade like you could do with any other window. You see, it's not the tint that is hard to get off, it's the adhesive. The tint should pull right off, leaving a hazy residue behind it. A good tint shop should be able to sell you or point you in the direction of a good cleaner that will take off that adhesive without damaging the defroster. So, if you want tint, get it, removal is possible without damaging the defroster.
After further review I now recall how the tint was done. They applied one sheet over the entire window then used a razor to cut the defrost lines to prevent bubbling. Still a pain in the ass but easier than cutting individual strips.
I have my MY04 tinted all the way around with 5% tint and I am in Souther California and as of yet I have not had a problem with Cops. I took my car to a place that has done about 10 of my families cars and they also cut lines around the defroster on the back window because they tell me it is easy to take off as well as it will not mess with the defroster working. Here are some pics not the best pics but you will get the idea.
Here is the side shot like I said I have 5% all the way around I hate having people looking inside my car especially at night.
