I wonder if the reverse is true - say you take 5 minutes to go 0-30....

This is called "impeding the flow of traffic" - another ticketable offense.

when I lived in Toronto, a couple of people decided to make a point and drove side by side on a 4 lane road for 300 km at exactly the speed limit (100km/h). There was a traffic log jamb for 25km behind them!! They got tickets, what a laugh!

have you had any tickets in the same municipality you got this one in?

If not, you can probably get probation. If you have had previous tickets (moving violations, not parking tickets), you can usually find a traffic lawyer that you can pay $30 and he can usually always get you probation. I've actually gotten a ticket while I was on probation, and still didn't have anything put on my license.

Jay,

Where were you? Road, Nassau or Suffolk? My brother got a street racing ticket on Hempstead trnpk. in Farmingdale which was Nassau. He stood before the judge in Mineola. He also had a prior stop sign ticket from a few months earlier. With some tactful linguistics from our lawyer he walked with a busted tail light tick. $70 + a surcharge NO points. Theres justice for ya. Anyway, my advice is grab a lawyer for the court date. It may cost more now but the insurance hike will kill you in the long run. Good luck.
