Default Threw a rod

2003 S2000 with 50,000 miles.

Running down the fwy the other day and <bam> the oil light came on and I came to a dead stop. Towed the car to my shop and they're telling me I threw a rod through the block due to low oil or a misshift down? I don't believe I even shifted, let alone misshifted.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

David

if you were low on oil and the lower end wasnt getting the lubrication it needed and the parts became hotter than normal its possible. how fast where you going and roughly what RPM. you did say running so that might be able to help out better

Wouldnt/shouldn't the idiot buzzer come on long before you're low enough on oil you throw a rod? I had one car do that to me... a '79 Z28 with a motor built by a moron, its pretty tough to throw a rod unless its put together bad or really being abused. I'm shocked to be honest.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't the oil for the same reasons, the temperature wasn't hot and the oil light hadn't come on. I'm confident that I was rpming around 7500 or so, at 70mph in 3rd.

I asked the shop to tell me what the ECU said before the incident and the reply I got was that if the check engine light hadn't come, and it hadn't, the ECU wouldn't tell them anything. I asked if Honda had looked at the car and got the reply that they would have to flatbed the car to Honda to check (we're right here in SoCal, 15 miles from US headquarters).

Does any of this make sense?

So it died while ripping thru the gears? Racing? They should be able to tell if the engine starved for oil due to damage throughout the engine.

Not racing, just zipping along at 70mph or so. Not sure if I shifted or not, but I simply don't recall.

No more than 10 minutes. I'm surprised to hear you say that. I've always been told that the car runs best between 6500 and 7500.
