I've stopped worrying about a dirty engine bay. I'm more into the way it performs. However, maybe once a year, I'll pop the hood open, hook my garden hose to the HOT water tap, give the "cold" engine bay a complete hose down. Then I spray Windex all over it, scrub any really bad parts, hose it down again with HOT water. The Windex makes it dry relatively spot free. I'll either let it air dry or fire it up and go for a drive. By the time I get up to operating temps, the engine bay is pretty much dry.
