Do all of you use the OEM honda oil filter or is there something as good or better available from your local car parts place? Also, can you pick up the crush washer for the drain bolt at a parts place too? I'm trying to avoid a trip to honda, not trying to save money.

One more thing, what size is the oil drain bolt?

thanks

I've heard that the Honda filter sucks, at least the one available in America. I use Mobil 1 filters. They are supposed to be very good quality, but pricey.

I see a lot of folks here use Mobil 1, K&N. I use the Purolator Pure 1. It's one of the better reasonably priced filters as demonstrated by a couple of filter tests that have shown up here in the past. Some say the US Honda filter is pretty ordinary for what you pay for. Better ones out there for the same money or much less. The washers, if you insist on getting them, should get from the dealer to make sure they are the right size, thickness and material. I've re-used the same one now for 3 changes with NO negative issues. The choice is yours (there has been some debate on this - depends on who you believe and how anal you are).
In case you might find it useful:

Also, some people use an oversized filter for a little extra capacity. I use the stock sized filter. Either one should be fine. You can probably find more opinions on this if you do a search.

Re: the washers.

You can probably get your friendly Honda dealer's parts dude to hook you up with a few free washers. Otherwise, they might charge you like $0.15 each like the Acura dealer did to me last year.

My CRX-Si has 10 years of track use, average 3 schools per year. I have always used the OEM Honda filter and have never had a problem. I bought a case of them several years ago because I would use three per year.

Now with the S2000 I'm still using the OEM filter, in fact, I'm still using from the case I bought, because it is the same part number.

Next time you're at Honda buy a bunch of them. Many of the dealers in this area say if you buy 2 you get the third for free. All I know is when I bought the case, I made the deal of a lifetime.

The crush ring is just soft aluminum and yes, if you have to you might find it at a hardware store, don't buy steel though, it will not "crush" to help make the seal.

i've been running OEM filters on all my Hondas and have had no complaints at all. SInce I change my oil every 3k, I also buy the filters buy the case for like $4 I think. (we still have 3 Honda/Acuras so I go through them pretty well)

If anything, i would get the crush washers from the dealer so that you can replace it everytime. the crush washer helps keep the seal tight without stripping the threads at the drain plug. I learned that the hard way in one of my earlier accords where I lost 4qts of oil in a parking lot b/c I had stripped the threads by using the same washer too many times. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

I'm also running the OEM filter with Mobil 1 oil and having the oil tested by Blackstone. No filtration problems have been noted for 7-8k mile oil changes...

Also, check out this link written by one of our own S2K owners (Marcucci).

Speaking of oil changes......I had a Mobil 1 synthetic change today and cost me $70 including the Honda filter. They charged me $7.50 a quart. I think I will start changing it my self.
Does any one run Amsoil????? sp?
I have heard good things about it.
