Default Thinking about 4.44 gears...

I know 4.57 gears are the hot thing, but I think they just take away too much top-end in the AP2. The theoretical max would be 135mph in sixth gear. Not that I ever plan on going much over that, but it's a bit low for a sports car. So, I'm considering 4.44 gears. A few questions came up, and I can't get search to work... so please have some patience.

First, is the buzz as loud as with the 4.57 gears? Wisconsin posted a great video of the 4.57 noise... I'm sort of hoping it won't be quite as bad.

Next, where should I purchase them and have them installed? What should I expect the cost to be?

That's about it... any other feedback here? Going FI is just out of my budget right now, and I don't really want to throw money into NA engine mods. This seems like a nice solution for a bit more kick.

I have a set of 4.44s and there is no buzz, no whur, and no whine. They are as quiet as stock.
The 4.57s are stronger and if set up correctly, there is no whine, just a little whur.

4.44s are available through Mazda Speed at a reasonable price.

We have one of the top differential shops here is So. Cal. that has dozens of S2000 differentials.

so the 4.44s on an ap2 should be pretty close to 4.57s on an ap1?

I like to look at it as the stock AP2 is "like" an AP1 with 4.44s. If you put 4.44s into an AP2, it would be "like" higher ratios than 4.57s in an AP1. How much? That's hard to calculate given the difference in redline of 1000 rpm between the two. This is partly why the two cars are so close in performance times. If the AP2 were able to extend its power all the way up to 9000 rpm, it would be game over for the AP1 in a drag race (assuming the driver is not a slow shifter).

Hey Junkie,

You can get 4.44s at www.racingbeat.com. My price wat $380 plus tax picked up. You can also have it installed cheaper than Tony Fuchs. PM me.

I also wanted to get some gears but didn't like the fact that the 4.57's made the whinning noise but i am considering getting the 4.44's.
