Perspective.

You're sitting really far back in a car that has a long hood and a short trunk.
Most cards in front of you will be significantly further away than the cars behind because you're sitting further back.

Not to say people dont tailgate, but if you stopped in place and got out, they may not be as close as you think.

This is it.
Just last night, backing in to my car port, I tried to get as close as possible to a chair sitting outside my door. I thought I was SOOOO close, and got out,.. had at least 2-3 feet.
When I pull in regularly, I have to stop 'early' (or what feels like it) and I'm actually closer than I think.

all very good points here. this car is definitely small so people can see around it easily causing them to act a bit more like its not there. in cases where there is no where to go for us i like the swerving idea, it makes people back off as they are afraid you might not be paying attention.

just be careful and get out of the way if someone is riding your ass, or swerve

Seen a fair bit of this.

It's really a mixed bag.

I get tailed a lot in my car too. I never thought about the seeing-over-the-car factor but it does make sense. My daily beater is also a small car but doesn't get as many people just off the back bumper.

I just kinda figured that people tend to gravitate towards the nicer looking cars.

My rear window is that crapy plastic and its faded so hard to see outa my mirror but I notice it too. It might be cause I brake lil harder/faster (not intentional, just don't take much foot presure to get it to slow down fast) so they come up on me fast when I brake. But I only get tail gated like this if there cara on front me, if I'm out in front it's the opposite.

Was tailgated this morning all the way to work (12 miles) by a guy in a E46 M3. Just chalked it off as a typical BMW driver...
