Is there an automatic S2000 in the works?

Very unlikely. I raised the possibility just a couple weeks ago and Woodwork, a Honda engineer, refuted it.

Please God - Noooooooooo!!!!!
That's like putting catsup on prime rib!
You think a stick is a pain?
I think you totally miss the point of owning this car.

if they did, they'd be selling out just like nissan with the 350Z. though i dont think it will ever be as bad. its reported that about 75% of the 350Zs produced in 2004 will be automatic. such a shame to let such a great car go to waste like that. i wouldnt want something like that happening to a car like the s2000, or any sports car for that matter. but really, who knows.... they make automatic NSXs.....

I don't think Honda would have a problem making a 5AT that could handle 8k rpm. Heck my 95 Civic revs to 7200 rpm and they made an automatic for it (but I have a 5MT of course)!

I saw a black Jaguar XKE parked on my street last week. It looked like an early 70's model, and it was in pristine condition. I was drooling over it a bit, and then I noticed the lever between seats. WTF? It was an automatic! I didn't know they ever made these as automatics. What a disappointment.
So what is the moral of this story? Maybe "Honda wouldn't be the first to sell out by putting an AT in a pure sportscar." Not by a long shot. That doesn't make it right.
