Odd thing is, I believe they are legal for off road use (such as racing and other off-road driving events) in all 50 states. Yet, any additional pollution would be the same, whether from on-road or off-road driving. (?)

Thanks,
Richard

Emil:

How bad a stink is it? I ask because I can't recall exhaust from pre-cat cars I used to own (i.e. '64 GTO, '69 Mercury Marquis) actually stinking that badly.

Thanks,
Richard

Installing a test pipe is against Federal (and state) law. Penality is $2500 (federal)

EPA

Is a $2500 minimum penality worth the insignificant HP gains? Not to mention void any warranty you may have?

I know what the Federal law is, but the Feds pretty much rely on the states to enforce it. And in those states with no safety or emissions inspections required, this pretty much means that there IS a law, but with NO enforcement mechanism. The last time I saw the Federal cops patrolling our highways was never.

A test pipe cannot void a warranty, such as the Honda new car warranty, unless Honda can show that the mod caused the failure. But a test pipe CAN void a service contract like Honda Care, if the provisions so state (and Honda Care's do). The moral to this story is replace your cat before going to the dealer with a Honda Care claim. Maybe, do the same with a Honda warranty claim, as the folks there are mechanics and not lawyers --- and may not know the law on mods and warranties.

Thanks,
Richard

Yes,about he same thing as pre-cat cars.
You dont smell it,while moving, but you can smell it sometime, when stopped in traffic,if the wind blows in the right direction;and you smell it for sure, inside a closed garage.
Richard,did you install yours yet.
Do it,the sound, and the power gain!!!(at least the butt dyno!!! )it's worth it.!!! For OFF road only.!!!
And,another thing, you'll notice you tail pipes will get dirty real fast.

Here's one for you Texans

Texas law states....

Vehicle Sales

Texas law prohibits any person from selling, offering for sale, leasing, or offering to lease any vehicle not equipped with all emission control systems or devices in good operable condition. Violators are subject to penalties under the Texas Clean Air Act of up to $25,000 per violation. Buyers are advised to have the vehicle checked for all required emission control devices prior to purchasing a new or used vehicle.

A vehicle may not be legally sold if its original engine has been replaced with another certified engine but without the related emission control components. Tampering includes the failure to install the emission controls associated with an engine configuration.

and though it may be legal to run a 'test-pipe' on an off road only vehicle, anyone REMOVING a functional emissions control system component (i.e. catalytic converter) to install a 'test-pipe' is guilty of a felony of the 3rd degree and violation of the Clean Air Act.

No emmisions testing here in florida. I love my berk test pipe. If I were to ever go to honda with my car I would just take the 30min to replace the old cat.....
Also, I get no smell from mine. Atleast nothing I can notice. I guess I smell a little bit stronger exhaust but no rotten eggs smell or anything like that. I wish I knew what you guys were talking about!

Aslo, I hate tree huggers. If the government really wanted to save the planet we wouldnt be using oil anymore. There are much better natural gases to use. Or even more electric. Oil is all politics, if they dont care about the enviroment enough to fix oil polution then I will use a test pipe!
