I know this is probably a stupid question but is there much of a performance difference with the test pipe?
I have no experience with the S, but on my miata yes difference in test pipe design did make a difference in performance. Since I did my own welding, I'd been thru' a few revisions of test pipes for my miata for track use. Besides the obvious requirement of smooth and matching piping diameter, my last revision of "slotted" out test pipe covered by a hollowed hi-flow cat (worked more like a resonated test pipe) gained back quite significant amount of low-mid torque compare to a straight test pipe in such a way that I didn't have to rev the last rpm to get the extra oomph on the next higher gear and 1/4-mile time was faster, all the while with not drop in high-end hp. Note that each revision of my test pipe was accompanied by optimal cam timings and ECU reprogram to match. Don't know how much of this apply to the S.

Testpipes are cheap enough for brand name ones. Even though its just a piece of pipe I would rather buy one such as the berk testpipe from the group buy forum and support the sponsors of s2ki or go with a T1R, etc instead of an ebay brand.
