Teen S2000 Drivers
I'm 16 and it's time for me to get a car. I'm thinking 01 S2000. I've been reading this forum for a while now and I've researched a lot about the S. Most of the info I found about the car was posted by older people. No offense but I want some opinions from people closer to my age. I've searched this forum for how much people pay for their insurance and all I've found where prices of people over 27 or prices that seemed to low to be true. I live in south florida so I know my insurance is going to be high because of that. Also, I'm going to be driving this car everyday. Mostly highway's and not to much traffic. I would like to hear about some thoughts or experiences from you guys about your cars. I would appreciate it a lot if I got some informative responses. I'm between choosing a used S2000 or leasing an A4 1.8. I know the A4 would be more practical but there's something pushing me towards the S2000. I'm looking for unbiased opinions but also I know this is an S2000 forum.

for your first car, get a FWD. You're definately gonna do something stupid with any car you get. You'll be safer not getting a RWD car though.
So maybe we wont hear stories like:
"I took at a 90 degree turn at 40mph and my car spun out and then a garbage truck ran into it at 50mph...wtf...why did it spin out? ...duhhhhh"
I'm 20 btw and got the S when I was 19. I owned 3 other cars previous. And 2 of the 3 were RWD. First car was the FWD. Trust me, you're better off.

Im 17, got the car 2 months after i turned 17. i pay somewhere between 3000-4000. I wouldnt recommend this as a first car at all. If i was 16 and couldve gotten the car right then i wouldve, but looking back im glad i had another car to beat on for a year and learn how to drive. You dont really learn to drive until you are by yourself

Hi mike505, I am a older sports car nut. I had to wait until was 25 to be able to afford car insurance for my porsche. and if you add in a speeding ticket or two it can be costly. but it was worth the wait. I know young people have more difficulty getting car coverage than I ever did. why not save your money and get something real nice , when the rates are more affordable? please dont think Im talking down to you.. I have been there and done that. buy some now that you can afford to insure.[cheap] and if you do have a misshap, your not out a bunch of money, besides you can learn how to drive in a beater. and you will apprecate a nice car even more.good luck and drive safe.

thanks you guys where really helpful. I really wanted an s2000 but i agree i think i should wait. I guess it's not worth it spending so much on insurance right now and maybe I'm not experienced enough to buy a car with these kind of specs. But I still have a few months before I will actually "need" my own car. I'll give everything some more thought. I'll probably go with more practical car. if you guys have any ideas that would be great. but no mazda 3's, scion's or mini's. My brother drives a mini and I can't stand it.

This guy learned it the hard way. Not a good car when you're making minimum wage. He'll probably lose thousands of dollars on the resale as well. That's lots of beer, parties, computers, and I-pods wasted.
What's the fun of using all your money to buy a car that just gets scraped to s#$! Only buy a car (and insurance) that leaves you plenty of money for Spring Break, pizza, girls and beer.
Nobody will be impressed if your new car is dirty, scraped up, and you have no money to go hang out. Buy the car when you can afford to live well all around with balance.
Expensive car with no money for food... screams POSER to me.
But that's just my opinion.
I'd go with a used accord, acura tl, or maxima. A 98 maxima is roomy, fast enough for a first car, and heavy enough that you'll survive a crash. You can get one for under $10k, easy. Then spend your money on having fun.
Besides, you'll want a new car in college anyway. Smack your first one up and upgrade later.
