stupid question...but my wheel is stuck after pulling all the lugs off... what gives?

If it's really stuck on there, once you get it off, check to make sure the brake caliper isn't sticking. Look for abnormal pad wear. Heat from a dragging brake would speed the corrosion that makes it stick.

I emphasized that the wheel should not be loose - it only takes a tiny movement to break the bond - I have done this at least 20 times in the last 10 years, and never broken a stud yet.

I watched a tire mechanic do it by simply turning his back to the wheel and giving the top of the tire a solid backward kick with his heel. Came right off.

....sounds like you are probably just not lifting the car high enough.
