Personally, I'm not fond of banging on the wheel. I suggest lowering the jack down, putting some weight on the wheel with the lug nuts off. That will get them separated. Then raise the jack back up and remove the wheel.
And since it is sticking (due to corrosion), you may want to apply a little oil on the hub to help prevent it from sticking in the future.

I think I have a better way, we do this all the time:
Back the car out of the garage or away from curb by 20 feet or so.
Have car on ground - loosen the lug nuts a small amount, as you would if you were going to change the wheel. They should be just snugged.
Accelerate forward and jam on the brakes - that should break the lock between the rotor and the wheel.
By the way, this can occur through corrosion or by galvanic action.
To avoid it, apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the mating surface on the rotor.

Seems like you could break some studs by having your wheels loose and slamming the breaks. Whats wrong with just giving the top of the whell a slight tap with your palm? I dont see the problem at all and its not like its a 10 hr job to get the wheels off. A slight nudge on the top and it should come right off. If not just give it a kick on the bottom.
