Stock S2k gas mileage exaggerated?

Followed break in procedures pretty rigidly for 200 miles. By 600 miles it was VTEC galore. Over the first 600-800 miles I burned just under 1/2 a quart of oil, and none since that point. Car is at 5200 miles now and just had its first oil change.
With plenty of VTEC, including country road driving where I'm constantly in higher rpms, 100% city driving, I've gotten 20 - 22mpg with an average 20.5mpg. However, like a said, a lot of heavy throttle involved here, and quality time spent in the VTEC range.
Cruising the hwy at 80-90 mph early in the cars life (1000 or so miles), I got 28-29mpg consistently, with 26-27mpg in very mountainous areas (West Virginia, parts of Maryland).
When the car was at 4000+ miles, I got 30.3mpg cruising between 75-80mpg, with bursts to 90.
ALL the above figures are top down driving. Out of the 5200 miles or so I've got, I'd guess about 50-70 of them were done with the top up.
I'm highly impressed with the cars gas mileage, and will continue to monitor it through the upcoming winter. I'm expecting it to improve now that its had the breakin oil changed, and hopefully it will further improve when I switch over to synthetic 5W-30 at approx. 10000 miles.
A lot of people seem to quote the Vette's mpg - although it consistently gets high 20's, sometimes 30-31mpg on the hwy, in the city, you will see mid to upper teens when it is driven like its meant to be driven - this is what I've heard from multiple owners, one of whom owned 2 vettes before picking up his S2000. EPA city estimates for that car are higher than in reality, because of the skip shift feature that forces a shift from 1-4 at low rpms.

S2k's small engine along with the VTEC saves the day on gas mileage when one drives 'normally' around city.
I personally average about 25~26mpg, that's combining city and hwy.
Less than 10mpg on the track though. That's what happens when you keep the rpm in between 7,000 and 9,000 all the time...
Anyway, who cares about EPA. S2k is an awesome sports car that does its job cheaply and efficiently. Below 6,000 rpm, it's really like driving a Civic... a not very roomy and rough riding Civic... While it cannot outperform the Corvette on the track, but for sure we s2k owners get more for our dollar!

This car gets the broadest range of MPG's I've ever seen.
I get only 22-24mpg around town and have gotten 32 mpg on a strict highway trip going ~75mph the whole way!
My Honda Prelude gets 30 mpg highway and 24 mpg running hard (In VTEC) on the Tail of the Dragon so I don't know what's up with the F20C....it must suck in twice the fuel when you push that pedal just a little more.

The gas economy for this car is ridiculous. Even the 505 hp Z06 can average 25+ mpg on the highway.

Look at the rpms on the Z06 at highway speeds and this starts to make sense. When you have a car with a lack of torque, you need short gearing. When I look at my tach when I am going 80 on the freeway, I am amazad I get around 25 mpg.

as posted on many other gas mileage threads...i get 22-24 average with elevation and mix of highway and city. on trips i have seen 28 plus with no sweat and average speed 70 mph plus. if i am hard on the car and drive it agressively i can see as low as 20-21, track day was 18, with very low vetc usage i can see 25 mpg.
this is wonderful mileage with a high performance car as every day use.
strange as it seems, my 2004 acura tl 6 speed sees 23 mpg with the same daily use and 30-32 on trips with above 70 mph average speed.

The S2000 is one of the few cars said to actually exceed EPA numbers, not just meet or like most cars fall short. Personally I currently get between 24-26 mpg city with my lead foot, and I've seen 31+ on pure highway cruising.
Also, since replacing the stock RE050s with Kuhmo Ecsta MXs (and 255 rears over 245 stock) my mpg is down around 10%, so tires may effect your final numbers.

I'm totally amazed by how people get 30mpg. My tires are pumped. Maintenance is all up to spec. Not too much Vtec.
Even if I drive freeway on an entire tank, I'm getting 26 max. How do you do it???

most of the other cars i've driven, all were below the EPA #s....at absolute best, they were on PAR with EPA's number...but never exceeded....it's good to know the s2k #s exceed the EPA ratings!
personally, i think 20/26 is a joke for a 2 liter engine in a 2800lbs chassis...
