Default Steps for out of state purchase

How would you go about purchasing a car that is 400 miles from you? does it do any good to try and listen to the engine? Have him take it to the local dealer/mechanic?

My 2 cents:
There is no way I’d buy a used car without driving it and seeing it in person.
It too easy for sellers to hide mechanical and cosmetic flaws when selling a car long distance.

Find a car closer to you.
It may take longer to find one but it will be worth it.

I'd have a local member check it out. Put a small deposit down and fly out to pick it up. If it doesn't jive, then modify the price of the car accordingly.

Always buy a round trip ticket for later that day. That way if you get there and it's a bust you are not stuck.

Which is quite likely the situation if you "modify the price accordingly."

theres indipendent inspection companies... ive had one come down and look at my subaru when i sold it. the inspection generally runs between 100-150 dollars, but those companies are super thorough!! they check EVERY fluid, inpspect and massage every panel, most have a tester that tests thickness of paint and other signs of respray and body damage ect ect.

if your serious about buying, id suggest an inspection like this.

Location in Ohio would help, or post it up in the Ohio forum and see if someone can go check it out for you.

Keep in mind, an s2000 owner isn't necessarily a mechanic either. My $.02. Worst case scenario, drive the 400 miles... seeing it in person is always the best route to go.. if you have a friend that is a mechanic, offer him/her a 6 pack and make them tag along..

good luck
